What Jon Ted Wynne says:
I looked at this DVD thinking it would appeal more to my wife than to me, but anyone who appreciates superb artistry will enjoy this amazing record of an equally amazing three-woman show.
3 Mo’ Divas is a perfect name for a show featuring three big ladies with big voices and big attitude. There really is something for everyone in their program. The live audience is shown becoming totally absorbed in the consummate artistry of these stupendous singers. Hardly a toe wasn’t tapping or a hand clapping with this crowd.
I appreciated this concert less for the musical styles presented (not really my kind of music) and more for the commitment of the performers. You can feel the energy through the television screen as they sing together and as soloists.
The show is slickly produced and the abundance of bonus numbers makes it clear that seeing these powerhouse performers live is even more gratifying than watching this filmed record.
No matter what your musical tastes, there really is something for everyone on this disc. Let the 3 Divas take you on a journey that is at once inspiring, beautiful, funny and exciting.
What Rhiannon Benedict says:
3 Mo’ Divas, ”A musical celebration of class, sass, and style”. Amen to that!
This 58 minute master class in vocal style whizzes past, bursting at the seams with three classy ladies (sopranos Nova Y. Paton and Jamet Pittman and mezzo-soprano Laurice Lanier) sassing a live audience at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts with performances in three different languages and ten different styles. Before you can catch your breath, it’s over! Talent and artistry win the day in this dynamic performance, and it only leaves you wanting more.
The pacing is quick and seamless. Behind-the-scenes rehearsal footage and short interviews with the performers bridge seventeen songs ranging from high opera to R&B to musical theatre. The direction and editing don’t allow a moment for your mind to wander. This is a sensational production featuring sensational music by sensational vocalists. Not a moment wasted.
The music itself (Quando m’en vó; Summertime; Defying Gravity; I’m Every Woman; His Eye is on the Sparrow to name a few) is diverse and thoroughly enjoyable. The performances by these commanding women are flawless. They blend beautifully in their harmony, and soar in their solos. Their personalities come through like a freight train and take over the audience instantly. This DVD will really make you wish you were sitting in the front row.
